Maintenance-Free Screening with DecoBattens

We tied in the new with the old with this beautiful, maintenance-free front entry screen.

We chose to use DecoBattens by Deco Australia as a maintenance-free timber-alternative for our front entry screen. Their extensive range of colours, styles and realistic prints sparked my interest. Learning that it was easy to install and it would look great long term, sealed the deal.

Here’s the details of product we used:

  • Size: Square, 100mm x 100mm

  • Product: DecoBatten

  • Colour: DecoWood® Casuarina

  • Type: One-piece

Choosing the colour:

I ordered their sample set of colours, as I wanted to best match our merbau deck and teak interior lining. The Casuarina was a great match as it settled in nicely between these timbers. It’s a nice warm, mid-tone timber colour.

Materials

  1. Post anchor bolt downs: We used those ones, however you can use whatever style you like to create the look you want.

  2. Angle Brackets: to connect the top of the battens to the veranda

  3. Screws

  4. Concrete DynaBolts: To fix into the concrete (optional depending where you’re fixing to)

  5. Drill

  6. Angle grinder: to cut the battens

The installation

  1. Choosing distance apart: First thing we did was figure out how much of a gap we needed. We actually did this prior to choosing the batten thickness also. I did a mockup on Photoshop (check out my course here) to see what looked best. Then we figured out a gap via a calculator. You can also use a calculator like this. We then marked out the spaces on the ground where each batten went.

  2. Cut each piece to length: Measure each piece and cut with angle grinder

  3. Fix Post Anchor Bolt Downs into base: In our case, this was into concrete so we dynabolted

  4. Fix the top of batten to veranda: with screws
